LM2842: The Schottky diode purpose

Part Number: LM2842
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM2840

Hi team,

My customer want to ask what's the purpose of schottky diode in the typical circuit? They test the circuit without this diode and it still works fine. Can they remove this diode?

  • Hi Sirui,

LM2840/1/2 contains only one switch. It requires an additional diode to achieve the buck function. The diode should not be removed.

But I don't know why the circuit still works fine without the diode. It is reasonable to say that if the diode is removed, the inductor will lose the discharge circuit resulting in the circuit not working properly.

Can you define the specific test circuit with your customer?

  • Hi Aurora,

Thanks for the remind. I didn't notice it's an asynchronous device. It's weird customer could make it work without the diode. Anyway I've suggest customer to add this diode for stable work.
