How to calculate total power dissipation for shunt regulators?
Total power dissipation in a shunt regulator depends on current flowing into the device and voltage drop across it.
Below is the typical application circuit for shunt regulator TL431.
Total power dissipation can be calculated as -
TPD = VKA×IKA + VREF×IREF
Typically IREF is very small when compare to IKA. Hence VREF×IREF term will have negligible impact on total power dissipation. So user can use below equation -
TPD = VKA×IKA
