I have a generic question regarding isolated power module like UCC12040, UCC12050 etc - what is the reason of relatively low (I would say very low, <50% in most cases) efficiency, vs an external transformer based design?

    External transformer bias solutions are larger, taller, bulkier compared to the small size, high integration and low component count of TI integrated isolated bias (IIB) IC solutions. External transformers operate at lower frequency (100's kHz) compared to IIB transformers which operate at high frequency (10's MHz). High frequency operation is necessary to reduce the transformer size suitable for IC level packaging but also incurs increased switching frequency related power loss. IIB products are designed to target an optimal balance between small size, thermal management for given package, "high efficiency" and low EMI. In addition to operating at lower frequency, external transformer bias solutions are capable of delivering more power than 500 mW as the UCC12040/50 are rated. Achieving higher efficiency at such high frequency, low output power is a challenge. No other integrated bias solution compares to the level of electrical, EMI, safety isolation and protection features achieved by TI IIB IC solutions.
