BQ35100: GE pin functionality not clear

Part Number: BQ35100

Hello i need confirmation what exactly the GE pin is doing. i thought it would power down or power up the battery chip but apparently it does not do anything at all.

I am using a Power Profiler and the chip does not need more nor less power in either state of the GE pin. I am using the power profilter mk2 from nordic.

I am using a 100k pulldown resistor on the GE pin so it is not floating and i confirmed that it is down/high with a voltmeter.

From the technical reference manual [www.ti.com/.../sluubh1c.pdf on page 25:

6.1 Device Functional Modes

The bq35100 device is intended for systems where the battery electronics are required to consume a very low average current. To achieve this, the device is intended to be fully powered off when not required through control of the GAUGE ENABLE pin.

This let me to assume that the GE pin should have an impact on power consumption. Also the functionality was not impacted. i could still read voltage, temperature and current. the chip is in UNSEALED mode.

Am i missing something?

  • Hello aaaaa,

The GE pin must be controlled by the host. There is a flowchart in the same section. The gauge will shutdown only after it goes into the active and data update phases. Until then it is waiting for the "START"  command.
