TPS61046: Over-voltage protection

Part Number: TPS61046

Hi team,

My customer was wondering more about this over-voltage protection feature.

If the output voltage exceeds the 28V condition, does this mean the output is effectively disconnected from the load? Does it produce any output? Will it maintain the 28V max output voltage or drop to 0V?

What is the intended feature of the over voltage protection circuit?
Thanks,

Lauren

  • Hi Lauren,

    Thanks for reaching out.

When Vout exceeds OVP threshold, the device stops switching. Once the output voltage falls 0.8 V below the OVP threshold, the device resumes operation again.

  • Hi Bryce,

Thanks for your response but it doesn't really answer my question. This is essentially what is says in the datasheet.

What happens to the output when the device stops switching? Is it effectively disconnected from the load then?

    Thanks,

    Lauren

  • Hi Lauren,

When devices stops switching, the output is disconnected with input because of the internal high side PMOS, but output is always connected with the load. Once the output voltage falls 0.8 V below the OVP threshold, the device resumes operation again, so output will not drop to zero.
