BQ3050: Senc or gg File

Hello Team,

I am looking for .senc file which is configured for 2p4S Li-ion batteries. TI online page has .senc file for 3S.

attached is the SBS read parameter from the BQ3050. Battery cell are of 3500mAh and Total pack is of 7Ah  @ 14.4V design battery.

But I am not able to charge the battery , charging voltage and current shows 0 mA. not sure why ? Am i missing something ?

I am having two different capacity cell battery pack , one is with 2600mAh and other is of 3500mAh. hence two pack ...5200 mAh and 7000mAH.

    Update Operation Cfg A to set the correct number of cells. Charging voltage must be higher than pack voltage.

    Cell count is updated.  Battery Pack voltage Increased.

    But Not able to see charging Current and Voltage. 

    How can i Set Charging Voltage and current value in BQ3050 ? 

    As per charger vendor , there should be some value inside both instead 0 . otherwise charger would not get @ what value it should charge. 

    Smart Charger will communicate using SMbus to get charging details. BCAST and CPE Bits have been set.

    See TRM section 1.5.2 Charging and Temperature Ranges

    Data flash has parameters to configure the voltage and current in each range

    Example:

    DF:Charge Control:Charge Cfg:LT Chg Voltage

    I have Updated all LT ( LT1 , LT2..) and ST ( ST1, ST2.. ) values in Charge Control Tab using bQEVSW application.

    But when i Connect Smart Charger to the BQ3050 , it is not able to charge. Charging Current and Voltage Tab shows Zero value only.  Seems Charger not able receive charging data on Smbus. That is where i am stuck now.....

    TRM mentions Charging voltage and current register is read only.

    This smart charger works fine with BQ20Z655 based battery. But seems having issue with BQ3050.

    I see CAL_EN on SBS. That could be a problem.

    Stop scanning on SBS.

    Then WriteWord on Pro screen Cmd 00 Word=002D

    Then WriteWord on Pro screen Cmd 00 Word=0000

    That should clear it.

    CAL_EN is cleared Now, but Still Charging not working.

    I have also Tried by setting Master Broad cast mode , By setting CPE and BCAST Bit. Also , Tried by clearing them.

    I am also attaching Dataflash values for Charge control and SBS Config , FYR. All Data I have set for 2p4S , 5200mAH Battery Pack.

  • How can we clear CF Flag in Battery Mode Scanning ?

    For , 6900mAH Cell What should be EDV0 , EDV1 and EDV2  Should be set ?

    To clear CF flag , you will need to run a full charge and discharge.

    GPCCEDV is a good tool to help figure out CEDV data settings that match your application/battery

    For CF Flag , run a full charge and discharge means Completely Discharge Battery by Resistive Load and then from Zero i need to charge to Full (100%) , Right ? Do I need to this one time ?

    With Correct setting of NR bit now i am able to charge the battery. But Real time Charging current seems different than applied...

    Putting multimeter (Fluke) in series shows around 1.4A  (As per ST2 ), but Actual current on SMbus we get is 559mA , Why ?

    Again , Full charge capacity shows less than it is set into SBS Configuration. Full charge capacity set @ 6900mAH but it shows 4400mAh. 

    After , 72% of charging It automatically jumps to show 100% Charging. Is it because of Fixed EDV Values ?

    I would check current calibration Applied current should match what is reported unless incorrectly calibrated. Make sure to calibrate at 2A

  • Ok , will Discharge @ 2A load & calibrate.

    Does same thing applied for Full charge capacity less shown  & EDV ?

    Now all Calibration done.

    Current Calibration Done @ 1A , instead of 2Amp. As i can manage for 1A Fix Resistive Load.  

    Voltage and Temp Calibration also done by inputting actual Cell voltage and Temperature sensor readings.

    Current Value shows Okay now (+//100mA  than set).

     Now , Problem is still on for Full charge Capacity....Still it show 4400mAH instead of 6900mAh.

  • Hello Bhupendra,

    You will now need to reset and cycle the pack before FCC can update. 

    I would recommend starting from the beginning to avoid filters that limit how much FCC can update after the first learning cycle.

    Take a gg file of your existing settings, Program the default firmware, then load the settings from gg file and any other steps you performed before running the cycle. Make sure to calibrate right after loading the settings from gg file.

    Reset worked.

    I am planning to create Senc file from this battery ( Firmware + DataFash + calibration data ) and load to other battery similar cell battery pack , So that fast replicate production can be achieved. ?  Or we need to calibrate each battery pack after loading Senc file ?  what do you suggest I

    What is the standard Production process ?

    The recommendation for bq3050 is to calibrate each board.

    Overview of production process:

    1. Program dfi/rom/senc file

    2. Calibrate

    3. Attach cells and run any tests

    3. For higher accuracy run a charge discharge cycle

  • 1. DO I need to Execute RESET Command  (0x0041) Every time I update Senc file OR Do calibration ?

    2. For Calibration : if we attach cells to BMS and by measuring cell voltage by Multimeter we insert those values into calibration tab (BQEVSW) , would that be also work ?

  • 1. No need to execute reset after programming senc or calibarion

    2. Calibration should be done using accurate power supplies instead of cells. Cell voltages may not be stable enough.

  • 1. Battery Pack  RSOC was 10% before Reset , it becomes 0 after reset...why ? I changed Battery Mode register and to reflect its value , RESET Executed .

    2. When should be use RESET command ?  purpose..

    3. Do I need to upload .senc file and Calibration values after RESET ?

  • Hello Bhupendra,

    1. On reset the gauge will try to recompute capacity. This is approximate and then as the battery is cycled, it becomes more accurate

    2. RESET should not be used in normal operation. It is useful for evaluation where you change a parameter value and want it to be used by the gauge. Not all parameter value changes require a reset

    3. Just upload the senc file and then calibrate.

    Can you guide which parameters required RESET to reflect its Value ? 

    Let say , i want to disable  BCAST  bit , will it require RESET after setting it to zero ? I want to stop Broadcasting charging voltage and current only. Other Alarm flags required to broadcast. 

  • The TRM should have details. In general, you should update all the parameters that need to be updated, then issue a reset command and then do a learning cycle.

    Since you already have a golden senc file, i do not see any need for you to use resets at this stage.

    1. TRM does not specify register List for which parameter we need to execute RESET cmd.

    2. Does BQ3050-EVM001 is already calibrated from factory before dispatch ?

    3.  After RESET , will RSOC remains zero till we charge all cells to 4.2V ? in my case , after RESET it remains Zero....even cell voltage is > 3.7V

      

  • 1. The TRM has the information. For example C.6.3.2 Qmax Pack. It says that the value is only read on reset. Another example is C.11.2.8 AFE OC Dsg

    2. The EVM/gauge is calibrated at factory but with a wider tolerance than required.Use bqEVSW and high precision voltage/current to calibrate with higher accuracy.

    3. RSOC will be updated by the algorithm at different points. It will only be accurate after a full learning cycle. See TRM section 1.4.10 Initial Battery Capacity at Device Reset

    2. Any vendor / Model recommendation for high precision voltage/current  power supply to calibrate ? At present i am using 4 nos of 3.3V LDO to provide calibration volatge @ VC1....VC4 , and Fix Resistive load of 2A for current Calibration , would that be Okay ?

    3. I have run 3 charge - discharge (qualified ) cycle but still i see RSOC jump during charging and discharging... Jump happens when cell voltage crosses EDV2 threshold.. ...Discharge Logfile attached here with.
