TPS65987EVM: Quires on EVM for 100W PD

Part Number: TPS65987EVM

Hi,

We are designing a Dock that can deliver 100W PD source (20V, 5A max) in DFP mode and has USB3.2 HUB for downstream ports.

We have the below queries:

1. For our application TPS65987D looks suitable. We checked the TPS65897EVM board schematic. On the EVM board for input voltage step-down conversion, a LM3489-Q1  buck converter is used. I think EVM is capable of delivering 20V @ 5A (100W) but the buck converter is rated for Max 4A current.

So can we use this buck for 5A or can you suggest any other buck converter that will be suitable for 20V, 5A PD?

2. For the testing we wanted to design a test PCB using the EVM schematic for reference. We have few quires in the EVM schematic.

1. For the FTDI chip (FT4223HL, U4) one EEPROM is used (93LC56BT-I/OT, U7), and For the PD controller (TPS65987, U1A) another EEPROM is used (MX25L8006EM1I-12G, U5) .

Are those EEPROMs have preloaded firmware? Or is it okay if we directly used the new(blank) EEPROM?

2. Can we use the TPS6598X-CONFIG tool to upload the firmware on both EEPROM?

  • Hi Nikhil,

    1. If you have questions regarding buck converter, I would recommend making separate thread with parts to get the proper expert to help you with that.

    2. It's okay to directly used the new (blank) EEPROM

    3. You would a separate flash program, such as TotalPhase Flash, and then you can flash generated bin from the CONFIG-tool onto the PD controller.

    Regards,
