LM5116WG: DC-DC converter - Parallel connection

Part Number: LM5116WG
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5116, LM5143

Hi, I am using lm5116 for 48V-12V 50A converter.

We want ty use it as 100-150A by connecting 2 or 3 converters in parallel, but I would like to point out that we do not use the sync pin. In order to do this and balance the currents drawn, we added an NTC resistive structure to the fb pin. In practice, this structure works without any problems. While different currents are drawn from the converters in the first place, when the converter, which draws more current, gets hot, it decreases the voltage and reduces the amount of current it gives. The problem starts when one of the converters shuts down completely to protect itself from overheating.

- What do I need to shut down the lm5116 in the safest way?

- Is there a more effective method for parallel connection without using the sync pin?

Thanks.

  • Hi Aydin,

Given the high current here, I recommend using the LM5143 65V controller in a 4-phase configuration. This controller has better performance than the LM5116 (shorter deadtime, higher current gate drivers) and has inherent current sharing for multi-phase designs.
