BQ24072: Application Question

Part Number: BQ24072
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25600

Hi,

Id like to use the BQ24072 Battery Charger Standalone application charge a LIPO battery as well as supply power to my load when charging.

Background: I have a LIPO Battery 3.7V 6000mAh that would need to be recharged using a Battery Charger IC via usb-c with a 5V 2A adapter from the wall. The system load is a raspberry pi 4b in which the recommended operating supply is 5.1V and 3A. So I would need a boost converter to step up the voltage coming from the battery. So the OUT would go towards the boost converter from the battery charger IC chosen. The rasbperry pi would draw current of 2A-2.5A with just guessing so Id like for the boost converter to be sized to output 3A. I have  boost converter in mind already, the TPS61235 and made the detail calculations already. So back to the BQ24072. Would I be able to apply this battery charger IC to charge the battery and supply an output to the boost converter as well? Id like an input current of around 1.3A-1.5A to the battery charger IC with a charging current of 1.3A to the battery. I am not sure how I can apply this IC to supply power to my load while charging the battery.

Thank you,

Andy

  • Hi Andy,

It may be good to use a switching charger in this application.

The BQ24072 utilizes power path management and so while it can charge the battery and supply the load current, it is only limited to 1.5 A being pulled from the IN pin. If you're only supplying 1.3 A to the battery this would be possible but as you introduce a system load at the output, the charge current will reduce (DPPM, INDPM) if the input current cannot handle both of these loads at the same time in an effort to maintain system and input voltages.

Something that may be off interest is the BQ25600 which features an OTG feature which is a boost converter feature.

    Best Regards,

    Anthony Pham
