TPS92515AHV-Q1: What is the actual current rating, timing limits on Toff and Ton and information on PWM dimming

Part Number: TPS92515AHV-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS92515

1. What is the actual current rating, the datasheet first says it is 2A, but then it also mentions it can only run at 1A and all the graphs and calculations show 1A and no discussion of 2A. So what is the exact deal with continuous operating current?

2. What is the minimum Toff time? Is the Maximum Ton time is 275nS?

3. If my Toff is around 1000nS and Ton is 700nS, how much dimming is possible with PWM? and has to be frequency and timing characteristics for PWM to work?

  • 1.  Max continuous operating current is 2A. However, to provide high reliability performance, TPS92515  have a thermal limit based on the maximum junction temperature. It is a function of the system operating points (efficiency, ambient temperature, thermal management), component choices, and switching frequency. Continuous 1A is capable for a wide variety of applications. Please refer to 8.3.9 Junction Temperature Relative Estimation to estimate junction temperature.

    2. Toff time is decided by Roff & Coff and it's constant time. Please refer to 9.2.1.3 Calculate OFF-Time Resistor ROFF

275 ns is minimum Ton time. The on-time ends once the inductor peak current threshold is reached.

    3.  Standard PWM frequency ranges can be used (100 Hz to 2 kHz).
