BQ27220: Optimizing sense resistor value

Part Number: BQ27220

We have an application that spends most of its time drawing about 2.5uA from the battery, but most of the charge is is drawn at about 1A (peaks to 1.5A). It looks like there is no way to capture the power drawn at the low end, since the total step count is 65536. The standard 10mOhm sense resistor gives an LSB size of about 122uA.

We could raise the sense resistor to about 50mOhms, which would lower the LSB size to about 24uA; still too high.

Do we have to ignore the low power draw so we don't overwhelm the sense inputs at higher currents? Is there a different system-side gauge with variable (settable) gain for the sense inputs?

Thanks!
