BQSTUDIO: BQ27425-G2A

Part Number: BQSTUDIO
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ27425-G2A, GPCCHEM, BQ27Z561

Hi

I downloaded and installed BQStudio stable on a win10 computer.

I try to follow the guides for updating the chemistry but find no tab called chemistry.

This is what I see when opening BQStudio. Obviously something is not going well, where should I start to look?

Also I can create a project but can not open it later, it is invisible even if the file is present.

  • Hi Sten,

What BQ device are you attempting to use with BQStudio?

    Best Regards,

    Jackson

  • Hi Jackson

    I am using BQ27425-G2A

I am using the demo board. My task is to find the right chemistry for one battery and verify that it can measure correctly.

According to the guides on ti.com, I don't have the icons and menu points they refer to, so it is a bit difficult to follow.

I can see the values correctly measued and make the graph and that follows what happens quite closely, so there is communication with the device and BQStudio understands what the device is saying.

It seems to be part of the BQStudio that is not installed or not available for whatever reason.

  • Hello Sten,

This is a ROM gauge, it comes with a pre-programmed chemistry which cannot be changed. The general process is to use the GPCCHEM tool to find the closest fitting chem ID for the ROM gauge and order that version for evaluation.

If you want the flexibility of a flash gauge you would need to switch to something like the BQ27Z561.

    Sincerely,

  • Hi Wyatt

Thank you, I see my options are different than I anticipated.

Some assumptions, please correct if not correct:

    • For the bq27425-GA2 I should write a data block to NVM describing my cell as well as I can, I have different capacity etc. to make this work as well as it can.
    • I should then perform the Learning for this combination.
    • I can make the Golden data and give that to the SW developer to write to the chips from the firmware in the product.
    • We know this is a LiPoly battery, so the GA2 should be reasonable.

This would be the best course of action using this chip?

The other half of my plan will be this, please correct if I got this wrong:

    1. In order to do better I would find the chemistry setting using the GPCCHEM tool
    2. Run the required cycle to gather data for point 1
    3. Form the zip file and use that online - BQStudio seems not to be able to do this for me while connected to the bq27425-GA2
    4. Get hold of a BQ27Z561 eval board and check with that and correct chemistry if it performs so much better that it warrants a design change.

I was pulled into this when the product did not perform quite well in the market, so I am trying to catch up. I don't know if the bq27415-GA2 is just used or the NVM is programmed and if so with what - I will ask.

  • Hi Wyatt

I still have the question about the missing menu and icons in BQStudio.

Are these missing because it is connected to a device that could not use thoses functions or is there a different explanation?

  • Hi Sten,

The missing menu icons are not there because the specific device does not use those functionalities. Other devices such as the BQ27Z561 will have those options available.

If the GPCCHEM tool determines that your cell chemistry is not similar to the pre-programmed chemistry on the BQ27425, I would definitely recommend using the BQ27Z561 is it contains a much wider feature set that allows for much more customization to better fit your application.

If you do decide to stick with the BQ27425, the procedure described above looks to be sufficient.

    Best Regards,

    Jackson
