BQ24401: Battery Charger State Clarification

Part Number: BQ24401

Howdy,

I'm working on a design to use the BQ24401 to charge a 3-cell NiMH battery. I think I may be confused on the operation and was looking for some clarification to ensure that I understand how things should work.
It seems like the design is working, when the circuit is powered with no battery, the LED light comes on and stays illuminated. I can then plug in my battery and the circuit pulls about 230mA from the power supply and this value decreases indicating that the battery is charging and the LED stays illuminated. After about 10 min the current draw drops down to about 50mA and pulses between 50mA and 0mA. I assume this means that the charger is in the top-off state and the LED is no longer illuminated at this point. I checked the battery voltage at this point and it is charged. I'm confused between the LED states that I am getting in my design versus the states written on the datasheet, and wanted to make sure everything is correct. I've checked the RC pin both when the battery is removed, and plugged in and have gotten a sawtooth waveform, and this waveform doesn't change with the behavior of the charger.
Thank you,

Michael

  • Hi Michael,

BQ24401 was a legacy charger IC with 15+ years history.  From the datasheet, the LED should not be illuminated when battery is absent as the LED pin should be high impedance. This product does not have ongoing design support. I would suggest you check whether the new charger BQ25171 with FETs integrated could meet your application requirements and simplify your design.
