TPS563201: Inverting output calculation - high side and low side current specs missing from datasheet

Part Number: TPS563201
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS564201, TPS54335A, TPS563211

Hi there,

I would like to use the TPS563201 OR TPS564201 to create a negative -3.6V 2A output off a 9V supply..

I have read many posts on the topic including this app note from TI which explains how to use the TPS54335A to create a similar solution: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slva910a/slva910a.pdf

It looks like either the TPS563201 OR TPS564201 could fit the bill but it is UNCLEAR from these devices' datasheets what the maximum output current could be as they do not list the maximum high-side and maximum low-side currents as is listed in the TPS54335A datasheet.

The TPS563201 / TPS564201 datasheets only list a general current limit. Would you be able to assist with these component ratings or possibly another way to assess these ICs maximum current feasibilities in a inverted solution.

Many thanks,

  • Hi Steven,

There is no high side current limitation about TPS563201 and TPS564201. TPS563201 and TPS564201 current protection is to limit the valley current value of low side.

  • Hi Steven

We do not have HS OC limit for TPS563201/TPS564201. We have LSOC for these two device which is Iocl listed in the datasheet, if you would like a device having HSOC, TPS563211/3212 is a good choice.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Ruby, Edwin, Thanks for your quick response.

I had a look at the TPS563211/3212 but there is not good stock. Can you explain the implications of not having this HSOC limit? How do I know whether this device can support my target current of 2A without failing? I also see the device does not have a negative current limit. Does this mean I will be able to get -2A output without any sort of protection kicking in? It seems all the TI reference designs for inverting buck configurations use ICs which are no longer in stock :)

  • Hi Steven,

My colleague will give you reply by tomorrow!

  • Hi Steven,

TPS563201 is ECO mode part. when inductor current drop to 0. it will turn off low side. The maximum output current is limited by OC, not NOC. please refer below equation to calculate the maximum output current.

    i also gave an example.

    Edwin.
