Can you patch in an EV2400 and check if bqStudio detects the gauge? If it's powered up, you can read voltage from the gauge without having to unseal it first.

Yes, I can read the voltage from the gauge with EV2400 & bqstudio..  For my project I have to read it with ESP32 via I2C.  Therefore, can you confirm my command sequence above is correct?  cause the data sheet states the voltage command consists of 2 bytes (0x08 , 0x09).  However, I also read that one only need to issue 0x08 to get the voltage.  Which lone is correct?

You need to read two bytes from the gauge for voltage and then convert this into a 16 bit integer (little endian). Please recreate the bit-pattern that you observe with the EV2400 when you read voltage and it will work with your uC.

Thanks.  The question I had was do I need to write 1 byte (0x08) or 2 bytes (0x08 and 0x09) to read the voltage.  Could you confirm?  

You can write only 0x08 and then read two result bytes (the gauge will auto-increment the "command").

Thanks.  After powering up the device, do I need to do any initialization/configuration steps?  Or can I just read it directly.

You can read voltage directly without any further configuration. The actual value may not be what you expect, depending on your system (if it doesn't match the default settings). Check the TRM for further information about multiple series cells and how to configure the voltage scaling.
