Hello,

We are considering using your PTH08080W module to power the Iridium 9602 satellite transciever. The power supply requirements for the Iridiums are:

(11 to 15 VDC Input, 5VDC 2A output)

1) Droop for 8.3ms burst of 1.5A current should not be more than 0.2Volts.

2) In-rush current to Iridium limited to 4A maximum.

Will this module do the job? Can you recommend this part or is there another that might be better? This is a battery operated system so efficiency is important.

The PTH08080 current limit is 2.25A . The application is 5V at 2Amp continuous with current bursts of 8.3ms 1.5Amp will exceed its current limits. The PTH08080W will not meet your requirements.

The ambient temperature is unknown ? Is it greater than 85°C? All of the modules are rated to a maximum ambient temperature of 85°C>

There is no smaller version of this module for 4Amp rating.

The PTN78020W ( larger module) would be the higher current module with this input voltage range of 11V to 15V.

If you can limit the absolute input voltage to 14V, The PTH08T231W (rated to 6 Amps) requires only all ceramic capacitors.

Tom,

As I look at the actual current profile for the 9602, the typical current draw is only 40 mA with a transmit surge of 1.5A for 10ms and a typical receive surge of 195mA

for 10ms. I'm thinking with this more precise spec, the PTH08080 will work. What do you think? Sorry for my poor initial specification. I have attached the current

profile in a word document.

The PTH08080W will work in this application with a polarized output capacitor of 220UF ESR must be at 15mΩ or greater . The total combined capacitance on the output is :

1. Output capacitance=

A. 330uF total capacitance with no more than 220uF ceramic capacitance.

B. The input bus must have the polarized 100uF capacitor.
