UCC28740: I want to know if my transformer will work with UCC28740

Part Number: UCC28740

Hello,

I am trying to step down a high voltage from 50-1 kV to 15V @2A. I did use the webench, which gave me UCC28740 according to my design specification, but I am trying to change the transformer to ZB1432-CL, which is a coilcraft transformer.

I would like to know if this would work by going for something alternative instead of the one given to me on webench. I am just trying to use a surface mount component instead of a through-hole.

Here is the transformer by webench:

Here is the one from coilcraft:

Let me know if this would work or if there are alternative transformers I can use.

Regards,

  • Hello,

Other than webench, TI provides design calculators that does more detailed calculations for you. You can find it here. (Under Design & Development, 'Design tools & simulation' tab> 'UCC28740 design calculator' and follow the instructions within.

  • Hello Claire,

Thanks so much; the calculator has been very useful. The next thing is to layout the actual circuit and see if the calculated value works. I have just one more question if you can help me with the answer.

I know there are two different grounds here on the actual circuit for flyback, and in my actual design I have another ground, which makes it three in total. How do I connect the ground together? Do I connect them like a star ground or do I connect each ground with a single 22nF capacitor?

    Regards,

    Ikenna.

  • Hi Ikenna,

In TI's schematic design there is a primary ground (on the primary side) and a secondary ground (on the secondary side). Primary circuit and secondary circuit are separated and isolated from each other, therefore the two grounds are different grounds and are not meant to be connected.

With limited information given, I am unsure where your third ground is at. But general rule of thumb is if it the ground is on the primary side, it is connected to primary ground, and vice versa.

    Best,

    Claire
