LM5158: Insulation distance

Part Number: LM5158

Our customer requires security distance 60V/0.6mm, but our part has ~0.2mm distance from SW to EP as below.

Do we have any possible solution or explanations about this case?

Thank you so much!

  • Hi expert,

Our customer also wants to know the minimum DMAX value under 500kHz & 1000kHz. Do you have any comments on this?

  • Hello Athos,

Yes, the distance from the pins to the EP is less than 0.6mm. If this distance is a need for the customer, he cannot use this package. But I am not sure if the 0.6mm rule applies as well to the exposed pad as this is mostly a thermal connection and not an electrical one. The connection to GND is inside the device not a hard short.

The DMAX values in the datasheet for 440kHz can be applied for 500kHz as well. The ones for 1MHz are between the 2 levels given in the datasheet.

    Best regards,
    Brigitte

  • Hi Brigitte,

Thank you for you quick reply.

About the distance, there's a connection between EP and PGND/AGND on the layout and I think it is an electrical connection.

The exposed pad must be connected to AGND and the large ground copper plane to decrease thermal resistance.

I would like to know how our design ensures insulation, and it would be better if there‘s evidence that could be provided to our customers.
Also, I would like to know if there are any considerations about insulation when laying out.

    About the Dmax:

Sorry I can't find the Dmax for 440kHz. I would be appreciate if you can provide some detailed accuracy value @500k and 1000k since our customer indeed need the value while design.

  • Hello Athos,

The package has its dimensions and if they are not proper for the customer expectation or rule, the device is not the right device for the customer.

The DMAX values for 440kHz and 1MHz can be found on page 8 of the datasheet. We do not have other data.

    Best regards,
    Brigitte
