Is there a maximum allowable Current Limit Resistor value? I saw that the minimum "Adjustable Current Limit" listed is 250mA -- does that mean the max Rcl value is 8 kOhms ? If so, what happens if you try to set the Rcl value higher than this to limit current further?

Your understanding is correct. 250mA is the minimum current limit we specify an accuracy. If you go smaller current limit than 250mA, the current limit accuracy is not guaranteed and it defeats the purpose of having a known current limit. Please let me know if you have further questions.
