TPS74901: Thermal Pad No Connect

Hello E2E,

We are using TPS74901DRCR (VSON) in one of our designs. We have not connected thermal pad to ground and left it floating. Will it affect VR electrical operation, or only thermal performance?

It seems from the datasheet section 10.3 that it can be left floating but that there will be a thermal impact only (not electrical).  Please confirm.

    Hi Russell,

    As long as the GND pin is connected solidly to a large GND plane, then the thermal pad being disconnected will not cause electrical performance failure. However if there is a fair amount of power being dissipated across the device, thermal shutdown may become an issue as the thermal pad has a significant effect upon the thermal performance of the device, so if thermal shutdown is entered, then performance degradation would exist.
