BQ24160: Not charging battery and no SYS output through USB or IN

Part Number: BQ24160

I have a circuit with a BQ24160 on it, based on Fig 9-1 in the datasheet (only change is that I'm not using a thermistor, so TS is connected to DRV). I have both the USB and IN inputs connected, both at 5V and able to provide 1000mA or more. I can't get the BQ24160 to charge the battery, and it will only power SYS through the battery. I've tried multiple batteries at different voltages (3.2V, 3.7V and 4.1V). I've tried increasing the USB current limit, charging voltage and switching high-impedance mode on and off, and replacing the chip with another one, but it made no difference. I'm not seeing any issues in the registers and I'm resetting the WDT every second.

Here are the registers:
-0x00: 00110000
-0x01: 00000000
-0x02: 10111100
-0x03: 10001100
-0x04: 01000101
-0x05: 00110010
-0x06: 00000000
-0x07: 00011000

Am I missing something, or is there something I could try?

  • Hi Cristian,

Is the /CD pin pulled low?  If so, using a DMM, is DRV ~= 5.0V? If so, is SYS = MINSYS = 3.6V when BAT=3.2V?  If not, using a scope, can you show the SW node, specifically looking for the square switching waveform?  If there is no healthy square waveform, then there is likely a solder problem with either the inductor or BTST capacitor.

    Regards,

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

Thank you for your fast response. It was a bad solder joint on the inductor. SYS is now outputting like it should, and it is charging through both inputs (only drawing 500mA, but one step at a time Slight smile).
