BQ40Z80: Battery Chemistry Setup

Hi TI Team,

We've recently started up with our BQ40Z80 based BMS design and we'd like to start off from setting up the correct battery chemistry. Although the battery that we are using is not on the battery chemistry list in BQstudio. (4.45V at 1030mAh capacity)

Is there a way we could make our own battery chemistry? If so how can we start the process.

Is setting up battery chemistry required or can we input the specific values of voltage and current we require for protector side of things?

Hello Patryk,

The chem ID must be uploaded for the gauge to function properly (gauge accuracy) the chem ID is not related to the protections unless the protections are based on gauging results like over charge.

You should use the GPCCHEM tool in order to find your ID, if there is not one that matches well with your cell then we can create an ID if you send the cells into our lab. You cannot create your own chem ID since the information within is proprietary.

Thank you for your response Wyatt.

I see. I'll go over these and follow their steps. I belive the gauging features aren't needed for this verion of the BMS, that's why I asked the question. We are required to set up initial and basic OV, UV, OC and OT protections for the time being.

I'm also jsut getting my hang of the bqStudio software from TI. I'm slowly getting the grasp of it while I'm reading though the technical documents.

As for sending you the cell sample. Is there a procedure we'd need to follow for this?

Hello Patryk,

If you only need protections that are based on current, voltage, and temperature you would not need to configure all the gauging.

It can be a lot to get familiar with, it takes time.

Once you run the GPCCHEM tool and don't get any matches, you can send us the data submitted to the tool, we'll review and make sure everything looks correct. If there is still no match after corrections then I can share the process in more detail over PM.

Okay, I'm slowly getting familiar with the software and the device so hopefully I'll be able to configure these basic protection configurations.

As for the cells chemID's once the samples are done and I've completed the GPCCHEM I'll notify you though PMs if I don't get any matches.
