BQ40Z80: Unable to charge

Part Number: BQ40Z80
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, BQ24600

Hi TI Team,

I'm working around the bqStudio software and the BQ40Z80 chip. I've included some basic protections into the register memory and tested the FET_EN command to give the gauge automatic control of the FETs. I had run a small test to spin up a motor with them without any issue. Now I'd like to test for charging.

I have a charger fabricated, it's design is the BQ24600 charging chip. It previously charged the cells I'm using without the BMS with no issues, but now that I've added the BMS to the cells I cant charge them. I have a feeling that it's the temperature sensor although I don't know why. Everytime I plug in the battery and the NTC sensor, charging does happen for a very short time (around a few seconds) and then it terminates.

When I was monitoring the BQ40Z80 in bqStudio, I noticed that current was flowing though for that moment. Another thing that I noticed is that suddenly the temperature feedback I was recieving was at -30. (I have calibrated the BMS to room temperature around 22 degrees C at the time.). Would a UTC error shut off FETs on the BQ40Z80? Why is my NTC reading tanking down 50 degrees?

Kind regards,

Patryk Szczesny.

  • Hi, Patryk

Can you upload the the bqStudio register screen so that we can see what is the fault that preventing charging from going on, also, can you advise how the temperature sensor is configured in dataflash?

Is the -30 degree only show very briefly and permanently when the charger is attached?
