TPS22810: Query regarding Output & Input inrush current

Part Number: TPS22810
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS22998, TPS22990, TPS22992, , TPS22811
I have used the TPS22810DBVR for my project. i have few doubts as follows
During Power ON, Suddenly I connect the load at the output of the IC, I get 12A inrush current at output. 6A inrush current at Input.
If the 6A Input (D1) inrush current is going to the IC (TPS22810DBVR), will it damage the IC?
Please do the needful.
I have shared the input (D1) and output (R30) of the inrush Current waveform.
  • Hello Sabitha,

The ABS max current value is 2A, so anything beyond that has the potential to damage the device. Please use a larger CT capacitance to increase your tRISE time to limit the inrush current below 2A or use a device with a higher current rating (TPS22990, TPS22998, TPS22992). Be sure to never connect a load while the device is already ON and passing VIN to VOUT because there will not be any limitations on the inrush current in that case. The way these devices limit inrush current is by controlling the slew rate of the output once the device is enabled, if it's already HIGH then it will pull whatever current is necessary to charge the capacitors.

  • Hello Kalin,

    Thanks for your quick response.

In my condition, The input voltage max 12V.Please recommended high current rating

  • Apologies Sabitha,

I missed that it was on a 12V rail. In terms of load switches we do not have any other than TPS22810 and TPS22811. You should be able to limit the inrush current more with TPS22810 by increasing your rise time via the CT pin. If you have limitations on that then perhaps TPS22811 would be the better fit.
