LMR10515: Package concern

Part Number: LMR10515

Hello Sir:

We want to use LMR10515YSDX/NOPB to replace FAN2002.

https://www.mouser.tw/datasheet/2/308/1/FAN2002_D-1805420.pdf

But end customer concern FAN2002 thermal pad is larger than LMR10515.

They are thinking which has short to GND risk.

Is it possible about this short to GND risk?

Would you please provide your recommendations for us?

Thanks a lot. Post

  • Hi,

Please note that LMR10515 is an asynchronous converter and FAN2002 is a synchronous converter. Even though they have the same pin-out, it might be necessary to make a layout change in any case.

When I compare the recommended land pattern of LMR10515 and FAN2002, obviously FAN2002 is over-sized compared to LMR10515. Infact, comparing the Bottom view and Rec Land Pattern of FAN2002, I am not sure why the pads are larger in the land pattern. This is not something that TI follows.

I think it's important to compare the land pattern on the actual board vs LMR10515 recommendations. Not always the CM follows the d/s recommendations. I also suggest to ask your CM to conduct Qual tests/ reflow tests in which they can capture possibilities of any shorts between the pins. Manufacturing capabilities vary from customer to customer and there could also be CM specific requirements for board design- size and spacing. We typically provide our recommendations in the d/s and the customer has flexibility on the board design and needs to ensure that there are no shorts or reflow issues.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Febin

  • Hi Febin:

    I missed the synchronous portion.

Thank you for reminding and assistance.

Do you have better solutions for replacing FAN2002?

Please let me know your recommendations.

    Thanks a lot.

  • Hi,

I would like to propose our newer devices which has better performance and also better availability in the future.

Please check TPS6282x family or the module variant TPSM8282x family.

    TPS62A0x could be a cost-competitive alternative.

    Regards,

    Febin
