BQ40Z80: Reset after waking up the chip

Part Number: BQ40Z80

Hi,

I am using the BQ40Z80 chip on my BMS. When I power the BMS, waking up the BQ chip is done by supplying the PACK pin with a voltage over Vstartup.
My question is, do I have to send the RESET command to the BQ chip after waking it up for it to reset the device/gauge?

Does this wakeup count as waking from Shutdown?

As I understand, resetting the device brings the gauge parameters to the starting point from the golden file.

Thanks in advance!

Vladimir

  • Hello Vladimir,

Doing a reset command will not bring back the flash values to the original golden file settings. The BQ40Z80 is a flash memory based gauge, so the Ra and Qmax table will be learned and saved so it is the same after a reset. This also includes things like lifetime data, cycle count, etc. To re-initialize the flash settings you would have to program the golden flash stream file or srec file again.

When the gauge comes out of shutdown mode it will perform a reset, there's no need to send the reset command since it's the same firmware flow with a shutdown-to-wakeup sequence as sending the reset command.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
