BQ34Z110: Failed Learning cycle on 12V 100AH Pb-Acid Battery

Part Number: BQ34Z110
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34Z100-G1, EV2400

Hi,

I'm doing the learning cycle on BQ34Z110 with a 12V 100AH Lead-Acid battery and I'm referring to TI document SLUA903.

My first question, is SLUA903 the right document for this IC?

If No, can I refer to BQ34Z100-G1 TRM instead? Or can you share with me the correct documentation?

This is what I've done so far;

I manage to perform the learning cycle up until the first battery rest after full discharge (step 3.2.2 in SLUA903 ) but failed to get the correct flags and status which I assume the learning cycle is unsuccessful.

The steps I performed:

  1. Configure the IC according to this thread until step 5. For other parameter, I leave it at default.
  2. Perform Voltage and Current calibration.
  3. Start the learning cycle with a fully charged battery.
  4. Perform the learning cycle.
    1. Send Enable IT (0x21) then RESET (0x41). This set the [RUP_DIS] and [QEN] flags and changes the Update Status to 0x04.
    2. Then start discharge with a load of 3A.
    3. After the voltage reached around 10.8V, I stop the discharge and let the battery rest.
      1. I manage to get the [RUP_DIS] flag to clear and the [OCVTAKEN] flag to set.
    4. Then, charge the battery to full at constant 3A.
      1. At this point the [VOK] flag is supposed to set automatically but it didn't.
      2. Then [FC] is set at one point during the charging.
      3. But the update status remained 0x04 it should be 0x05.
    5. Now, I'm discharging the battery.

I would like to know, is 3A enough for the discharge and charge considering the battery capacity is 100AH?

Is the whole learning cycle unsuccesful because I refer to the wrong documentation?

Do I need the EV2400 hooked up to the IC at all time during the learning cycle?

  • Hello Nur,

Refer both documents. The TRM may not have the detailed steps that are specified in SLUA903

The discharge current must be between C/5 and C/10. This seems to be the issue with your learning.

See SLUA903 section 3.2.5 Discharge Battery to Empty

It is important to follow all instructions and check the flags at each step
