Hi team.

What's hte difference between primary protector and secondary protector? Thanks!

Nison

  • And what's the difference between monitor and protector?

  • Hi Naizeng,

First, you may find this video helpful: Battery Protector, Monitor, or Gauge? | TI.com Video.

    Primary vs. secondary protector:

    • Primary protectors can be the only protector in a system.  They do not have to be paired with another protector or monitor.
      • Ex: BQ2970, BQ77905, BQ77915, etc.
    • Secondary protectors must be used in a system with a primary protector or monitor.  They cannot be the only device providing protection to the system.
      • Ex: BQ7718, BQ77207, BQ77216, etc.

    Monitor vs. protector:

    • Protectors offer simple, hardware-based solutions that address unsafe conditions by blowing a fuse or opening FETs.
    • Monitors are capable of being programmed to meet customer needs and provide system information to the user, such as cell voltages and system current.  This information can be used by the monitor to open FETs or blow a fuse, but it also can simply provide the user with information about their system and battery pack.

    Hopefully this helps!

    Best,

    Andria
