BQ25303J: 5 Hz STAT frequency without battery

Part Number: BQ25303J

Hi there,

I plan to use the BQ25303J in a device with an optional battery. I've tested the no-battery scenario with the BQ25303JEVM developer board, and the D2 (STAT) LED is blinking at about 5 Hz on my video.

According to the datasheet, STAT should always blink at 1 Hz in case of any fault. How is it's blinking at 5 Hz when no battery connected? Is this frequency specifically related to the no-battery scenario? If so, are there perhaps different frequencies related to different failure cases?

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • HI Laszlo,

The 1Hz blinking frequency is for faults when a battery is attached.  With no battery attached, the charger sees only the capacitance at its BAT pin and so the charger charges up the capacitance, terminates, the capacitance discharges, gets recharges, terminates, rinse and repeat.  So the blinking frequency is a function of how much capacitance is at the BAT pin.
