TUSB1046A-DCI: Inquiries regarding USB-C (TUSB1046A-DCI) configuration

Part Number: TUSB1046A-DCI
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65DSI86

Hi, TI expert.

The customer has an inquiry while reviewing the support of DP (Display Port) through USB-C on the board currently used.

The composition of the board currently in use is as follows.

AP(USB3.0) -> SWITCH -> USB SWITCH(PTN36043) -> TYPE C CONN

1. The AP (SDM450) in use does not support DP (Display Port) on the USB line.

Q1) Considering the situation above, is it correct to connect the IC as shown below?

* MIPI D-PHY V1.2 (AP) -> DP (using SN65DSI86) -> USB (TUSB1046A-DCI) -> Monitor

Q2) When using TUSB1046A-DCI (using USB SWITCH (PTN36043) as a substitute..), what will be the resolution and speed when using USB 3.1 SSP + 2 DisplayPort lanes?

Q3) Is USB / DP recognition switched inside the IC?

Please check. Thank you.

  • Hi,

    Please see the simplified block diagram below. The GPU in this case will be replaced by DSI86.

    The USB/DP recognition is handled by the PD controller through CC1/2 communication.

    Thanks

    David

  • Hi, David

    Thank you for answer.

    Please also check the additional inquiries section.

    When using TUSB1046A-DCI, (When used as a substitute for PTN36043..)

    Q1) What is the resolution and speed when using USB 3.1 SSP + 2 DisplayPort lanes?

    Q2) You said that USB/DP recognition is handled by the PD controller through CC1/2 communication, but looking at the block diagram, it seems that the PD controller needs to be configured externally. Is that right?
    If so, can you recommend a suitable PD controller?

    Please check. Thank you.

  • Hi,

    Q1) What is the resolution and speed when using USB 3.1 SSP + 2 DisplayPort lanes?

    This depends on the USB and DP Source. TUSB1046 can support USB up to 10Gbps and DP up to 8.1Gbps. For resolution, you can use this link, https://k.kramerav.com/support/bwcalculator.asp to calculate the max bandwidth and make sure it is within the bandwidth being supported by the DP source.

    Q2) You said that USB/DP recognition is handled by the PD controller through CC1/2 communication, but looking at the block diagram, it seems that the PD controller needs to be configured externally. Is that right?
    If so, can you recommend a suitable PD controller?

    Please refer to the TPS6598x PD controller family.

    Thanks

    David
