TPS7B87-Q1: Thermal resistance (junction to case)

Part Number: TPS7B87-Q1

Hello team,

Could you please explain the difference between the junction-to-case thermal resistance values mentioned for top and bottom? Usually the datasheet mentions a single value for junction-to-case resistance.

Thank you.

  • Hi,

The thermal metrics for Junction-to-case (top) and Junction-to-case (bottom) assume that heat only leaves the package through the respective side of the package. Since most of the heat leaves through the bottom of the package (i.e. the thermal pad), the Junction-to-case (bottom) has the lowest of all of the thermal resistances, and since little heat leaves through the top of the package, the Junction-to-case (top) thermal resistance is the highest.

    Regards,

    Nick
