TPS2660: IEC61000-4-5 Surge Immunity

Part Number: TPS2660
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TVS3301,

Hello,

I have a design with the following requirements:

  • Input voltage = 24VDC nominal, 33V max.
  • No damage from reverse bias on the input
  • Meets IEC61000-4-5 class 2

Originally, we had planned to use TVS3301 + TPS26400 to provide surge, reverse bias, and overcurrent protection. However, we have been told that our input will be subject to a 500V/ 2 ohm IEC61000-4-5 test, not a 1KV/42 ohm test. Therefore, I don't think TVS3301 will be sufficient as it only supports 1KV/ 42 ohms.

I considered using a TVS instead, and 3.0SMCJ33CA seems suitable. This diode has 33V standoff voltage, but about 68.9V clamp voltage. I could update the load switch from TPS26400 to TPS26600 to get a higher input voltage, but the absolute max is sill just 62V. So it is not quite high enough. If I ignore my requirement for 33V max, I can use  3.0SMCJ28CA and the standoff voltage is now 59V, which is acceptable. But I'm told I cannot relax that 33V requirement, and I am also concerned about some of the issues discussed in SLVA930.

My question is whether TI has a recommendation or reference design for this situation. Also, can I parallel TVS3301?

  • Hi,

    Thanks for reaching out!

TPS2660 can withstand 70V/10ms so, 3.0SMCJ33CA would be good enough to use with TPS2660.

To have more margin, you can consider 3.0SMCJ30CA which has minimum breakdown voltage at 33.3V

    Best Regards,

    Rakesh
