TPS50601A-SP: TPS50601A-SP: Minimum Load Required?

Hi,

For initial testing, we plan to power up TPS50601A-SP with no load. Input voltage to the device will be 5 V. Just to confirm: the device can regulate down to zero load or is a minimum load required?

According to the datasheet, "The total operating current for the device is approximately 5 mA when not switching and under no load. When the device is disabled, the supply current is typically less than 2.5 mA." It seems like the device is able to regulate with no load? If so, I should be expecting the device to draw around 5 mA from the source under no load condition, is that correct?

Hi Fernando,

Yes, this device can regulate properly with open circuit on the VOUT node. I recall ~19-20mA of PVIN+VIN current when the device is regulating from 5V to 2.5V with no current load. I believe the 2.5mA should be expected when PVIN and VIN are still applied but the device is disabled (EN=low) in which case there is no output regulation.

Hi Christian,

Thank you for the prompt response. With the device enabled, is there a rough estimate of how much current the device will draw when regulating from 5V to 3.3V with no current load? The EN pin will be pulled up to 5V so the device will remain switching.

The current will be about the same for 5V=>2.5V or 5V=>3.3V with no load: ~19-22mA.
