BQ76PL455EVM: Stacking of Evaluation Modules compared to bq76PL455A-Q1

Part Number: BQ76PL455EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76PL455A-Q1, , BQ79616, BQ76PL455A

Hello,

I'm currently in the process of designing a BMS that utilizes the bq76PL455A-Q1 IC and have been getting myself familiar with the features and capabilities of this IC with the BQ76PL455EVM Evaluation Module.

One specification that I found and am looking for guidance from your team is that on the Evaluation Module User's Guide (SLUUBA7A) located on page 3, it states the following, "For battery stacks with more than 16 cells, stack up to 6 bq76PL455EVMs, in series, to support up to 96 cells".

While on the bq76PL455A-Q1 data sheet (SLUSC51C) located on page 1, it states the following, "Up to 16 ICs in Daisy-Chain With Twisted Pair".  It also goes into detail on the daisy-chain communication on page 105 and states again that it can interface with up to 16 ICs.

The question I have is what is limiting the evaluation module so that it can only be stackable up to 6 modules?

Thank you,

Curt

  • Curt,

I think the EVM user guide just calls out 96cell (typical 400V packs) for why it says 6, but there should not be any reason you cannot go up to 16 devices. Feel free to also check out bq79616 for an updated featureset and more robust daisy chain.

    Regards,

  • Thank you Taylor,

Just out of curiosity, what limits the BMS to only go up to 16 devices?

    Curt

  • Curt,

A couple things, the register address size for addressing and how many devices we validated in our lab to ensure performance is robust. In bq76pl455a the signal degrades the more devices you add in the stack where as in bq79616 we reclock the signal through each device so it is would be much more robust in larger daisy chain stacks. It ialso supports galvanic isolation with bq76pl455a does not.

    Regards,

    Taylor
