PTN78000W: PTN78000WAZ vs PTN78000WAH

Part Number: PTN78000W

Hi Team,

Our customer would like to confirm if they can use the PTN78000WAZ on the board designed for PTN78000WAH. Please see the details of his inquiry below.

We have some SMT parts, PTN78000WAZ, otherwise identical to PTN78000WAH and are trying to figure out whether we can drop them into the board.

You can see in the photos that the package fits perfectly.

Do you know if TI offers any guidance on doing this?

We would like to avoid it , but we can always redesign the board to include both SMT and Thru-hole footprints.

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hi Danilo:

We don't suggest to put SMT part on the through hole foot prints. The risk will be  manufacture reliability which may make the module disconnect with the PCB

    1.  the pin solder not very well connect to the board due the the solder on the pin go through the hole in reflow

    2.  the vibration or other mechanical stress may make the module disconnect with board.

    Thanks
