BQ25798BKUPEVM: not able to select the needed function through the gui

Part Number: BQ25798BKUPEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LAUNCHXL-CC2640R2, USB2ANY, BQ25792, BQSTUDIO, EV2400

Hi Team,

Can you help with the inquiry below?

A customer is building a BLE solar power battery backup soil monitoring system to a central hub.

The system consists of:

PV has a 6-7V with max of 330mA

(1S) Samsung 50E 27500 5000mAh and 9.7A output battery

the load is a LAUNCHXL-CC2640R2

The customer followed EVM and BQ manual and moved pins to where It is needed and opened the GUI then tried to select the options they need however, Some options is not selectable (disabled check box), such as EN MPPT and EN_backup_mode. Also, the D13 (STAT LED) will not light even after being jumped, and the LED does operate when a Diode tester is used.

  • HI Marvin,

The jumpers look correct assuming the shipFET features are not desired.  Also, the ILIM_HIZ clamps the input current limit to 1.5A regardless of the D+/D- autoselect at power up.  Since your solar panel can't provide more than 300mA, I would move ILIM_HIZ jumper to 0.5A setting.

Regarding your GUI issues, it appears you are using the USB2ANY GUI from JP33.  Please insure that you have installed the latest USB2ANY firmware from the USB2ANY web folder.  You have to use a paperclip to push a button on one edge of the USB2ANY at some point during the installation.

It is possible that GUI was not updated correctly from the BQ25792, which didn't have MPPT or backup mode.  If so, you can still use the GUI but you will have to write directly to the register bits on the manual I2C read/write page.

REG0x15[0]=1 is MPPT - resets to zero if WD timer expires or V(BAT)<SYSMIN

REG0x0F[0]=1 for backup mode -resets to zero if WD timer expires

REG0x16[0]=1 forces ACFET1 on in Backup mode

  • Hi Jeff,

Thank you for the response. The customer tried these options but it seems to not work and the issue still persists. They tried to manually update the 0 to 1 but it changed back.

They tried using Battery management studio 1.3.111 but was unable to since the BMStudio only accepts .txt files and the USB2ANY only accept .I2C files. They also encountered a Device ACK error with the USB2ANY.

Do you have other suggestion to resolve the issue?

    Again, thanks for the help.

    Regards,

    Marvin

  • Hi Marvin,

BQSTUDIO uses the EV2400 box and TI-charger GUI uses USB2ANY box.  Both have a GUI interface with buttons and pull downs that don't need files.

Is a battery or simulated battery attached at BAT?  Does that applied voltage agree with the onboard jumper selection for 1S, 2S, 3S, 4S?  Does the EVM work in standalone (no I2C) with a power supply at VBUS instead of solar panel?

    Regards,
    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

If the customer attaches a solar cell, the unit connects to the BQSTUDIO and if they remove the panel, connect it to a USB, and jump it for the USB it will reconnect to the GUI. They have not tried using a PSU to the system, just the USB to PC.

Do have a battery to the BAT, not simulated. thei jumper is set for 1S and at 1500kHz. the first time they plugged into a computer, D13 (STAT LED) did not light. does this mean that the board is bad?

    Regards,

    Marvin

  • Hi Marvin,

The STAT LED over works if VBUS > UVLO.  It does not work with battery only but the I2C registers should work.  In battery/HiZ mode, the battery provides power to the system or reverse/OTG mode can be enabled to provide power back to VBUS.

    Regards,

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

Do you have any suggestion or a workaround on this since the GUI is having issues on the customer side? The BQSTUDIO uses the EV2400, and their last option would be to manually write the registers in USB2ANY Explorer.

    .Thank you and regards,

    Marvin

  • Hi Marvin,

Unfortunately, I don't.  As long as there is either a voltage above UVLO at VBUS or at VBAT (not that the voltage with shipFET not bypassed (default) is close 3.6V), the registers should be readable and writable.  I am traveling this week for work.  I can ask another team member to test the online GUI.  The only know issues all stem from not having the latest firmware on the USB2ANY box.

    Regards,

    Jeff
