TPS22990: Over current protection

Part Number: TPS22990
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS22950, TPS22997

Hi team,

Good day!

My customer is using TPS22990 for their design now, and they want to know more details about the OC protection of TPS22990, they want to know in which current TPS22990 will turn on the overcurrent protection.

Thanks a lot. Looking forward to your reply!

  • Jerry,

The TPS22990 does not have any explicit overcurrent protection the way a device like the TPS22950 would have. Instead, the TPS22990 has a configurable slew rate via the CT pin. This allows the user to control the dv/dt and thus limit the power dissipation on turn-on for events such as capacitive inrush. If explicit overcurrent protection is needed, I would recommend the TPS22950.

  • Hi Timothy,

    Thanks for your explanation!

As mentioned in TPS22990's datasheet, TPS22990 can can support a maximum continuous current of 10 A. I wondering what will happen if the current is above 10A, will the device be damaged?

Looking forward to your reply, and wish you have a nice day!

  • Jerry,

This device does not have thermal shutdown so yes, it could be damaged if you operate above the recommended current limit. Keep in mind that this is very layout specific though. This is all about the maximum junction temperature of the FET. For steady state DC, you can calculate approximately how hot the device gets with the following formula:

... compare your calculated junction temperature with the maximum junction temperature in the datasheet (125C for this device).

The TPS22990 is a bit older device- I would recommend pushing the TPS22997 as we just released this device in December of last year and it will have all of the features of the TPS22990 as well as thermal shutdown (which will protect the device).

    Best Regards,
