UCC28951: How multiple power module of PMP8740 can be paralleled ?

Part Number: UCC28951
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PMP8740, UCC29002, UCD3138

Hello,

I am designing a battery charger and using UCC28951. I need to know how I can digitally connect multiple chargers in parallel.

I have gone through the schematic of PMP8740 but I didn't understand how it's done there.

THanks,

Vicky

  • Hello,

I have received your inquiry and it is under review and I will get back to you shortly.

  • Hello,

If you were trying to parallel using a analog control, you could use the UCC29002 load share controller.

You do have a second option with analog load share.  You would need to design the power stages as peak current mode control.  One power stage would be the lead controller and you would use it's voltage amplifier to control all the other power stages that you are running in parallel.  The other power stages controller's would require that you set the voltage amplifier as followers and then you would feed the master voltage amplifier output into the slave converters voltage amplifier non inverting input.  This would cause all the power stages to share current.

If you are looking for a digitally controlled phase shifted full bridge converter the UCD3138 should be able to accomplish this task.  The following link will bring you to the data sheet for this device.  If you have questions regarding the UCD3138 please repost with UCD3138 in the thread title to the appropriate applications engineer can answer your questions.

  • Hello Mike,

Thank you for the reply. How paralleling has been done in PMP8740 without UCD3138?I don't see UCD3138 in the schematic.

I will try to explain what I understood from PMP8740, please guide me if I am wrong. Let's consider 3 2kw power supplies has been connected in parallel, in that 1 would be master and 2 would be slave. Master will be communicating with bms as well as slaves. If requirement is of 150A current then master will send the current reference of 50A to each slave so that all 3 power supplies collectively provide 150A current. Here even if phase of all 3 power supplies controller is  not synched it won't cause any issue. If this is correct then I can just achieve it easily.

  • Hello,

Your question was "I am designing a battery charger and using UCC28951. I need to know how I can digitally connect multiple chargers in parallel."

The UCC28951 is an analog phase shifted full bridge controller.  The UCD3138 is a digital power supply controller that can be used in a phase shifted full bridge.  You would also be able to run multiples in parallel.  If you want to do digital control the UCD3138 would be the correct power supply controller for you.

Your thought on how the UCC28951 would load share is correct.  They will load share even if they are not synchronized.

If you did want to synchronize the converters it is possible.  The following link will bring you to an application note that shows you how to synchronize multiple phase shifted full bridge controllers.
