BQ40Z50-R2: State of health low

Hi

I am having a problem with my batteries because the state of health has got dramatically low, as low as 4% for reasons I haven't understood yet. I am using a Bq40Z50 R2 with a custom made board. The batteries have been working fine until recently.

Things to note

  1. During creating Golden file we didn't follow the final step which is "Before saving the Golden File, set Update Status to 02 to disable IT gauging, set the Qmax Cycle Count to 0, and set the Cycle Count to 0. For a pack side gauge, this ensures that when the pack is assembled and gauging and lifetime data is enabled, the cycle counts start from 0." Update status remains 06. we still need to update impedance on field.  does it affect our problem?
  2. The battery delivers high current up to 30 A for 100 ms during use. does this high discharge spike affect our problem?
  3. Our battery and charger are designed to 8.2 V(4.1V per cell)  Full charge. Even though two 4.2 V  cells in series are used.
  4.  Lifetimes seems not to be updated.
  5. Ra Table values have changed a lot during usage period (eg. R_a 14 value  is 32767 )
  6. SRP and SRN pins are connected to  capacitors with values 100nF

  • Hello Sam,

    Please share your .gg file and a BQStudio log showing the behavior occurring if possible (or just a short log showing the SOH being very low).

    SOH is based on a constant current load that is user configurable, 25degC simulation temperature, and the Ra and Qmax data that are learned as part of the algorithm. If SOH drops very low I would suspect either your Qmax had a bad update (which shouldn't occur because it is filtered and capped at a max delta for each cycle) or the Ra table learned incorrectly. We will need more data to help further.

  • hi Wyatt i have shared the files. but i wanted to add that the charger charges to 8.2V wich is less than the battery full volt (wich is 8.4 or 4.2 per cell). can this affect the Qmax value.

    From your log it looks like a lot of strange things are occurring, your DOD at EOC is way too high (over 6000) I would expect it to be closer to 1000 (0 to 2^14 range) this indicates to the gauge that your usable capacity range is pretty small. Also your CompRes values are pretty high, which indicates that your resistance table is high. From what it looks like the reason SOH is so low is with the high resistance and very low DOD at EOC when a load is applied there is basically no useable capacity before terminate voltage is reached.

    Thanks for sharing the .gg file. Your Ra table is very high, unless this is an extremely old battery this is probably the reason (along with DOD at EOC) your SOH is reporting so low.

    DOD at EOC is the Depth of Discharge at End of Charge, this should usually be less than 1000 (on the scale from 0 to 2^14) If it's too high that means the gauge thinks 100% SOC is at a lower point on the chem ID OCV vs DOD curve.

    Can you share more details of your load profile? Do you have a log of the profile you could share?

    thank you for the help.  we dont actually have load files but when we use the battery it uses about 25-30 A for around 100ms. and we use it with a pressand hold butten to use it.

    I would need more information about your load profile to determine why the Ra table is getting so large. If you do large pulses that are spaced apart (around 200s away from each other or more) with a low load rate between then most likely the gauge may be miscalculating the resistance since large load pulses cause a transient response modeled by multiple RC time constants. Impedance Track uses a resistance modeling for most of it's gauging.

    So is there a way to configure the current chip to better repond to our profile? Speed up sampling, reduce impedance track adaption (to 0)? Only rely on OCV at resting periods and Coulomb counting?
    The device is only active (approx 100mA load) minutes per use occation, with one ore more >20A pulses per occation.

    The current filtering is not related to this, this is a standard filtering circuit we have on all gauges and since we use a delta-sigma ADC we are able to capture all passed charge regardless.

    Unfortunately with your load pulse being so random and your standby current is essentially large enough to prevent OCV readings and you will be in the active discharge phase I don't see a way we could set any filtering because the pulses are not periodic.

    How much does the 100ms affect the voltage? what is the voltage drop from the pulse?

    Depending on cell voltage, voltage drop over (the two) cells is 0,5 to 1,5V during pulses.
    If I understand you correctly: RC filtering is no problem and I understand bq can accumulate discherged capacity with reasonable accuracy?

    Is the Problem  respones/filtering/updates in impedance tracking algorithm due to short (100ms) pulses?

    We use the chem ID OCV vs DOD table along with the present DOD we track during discharge to know what the resistance is. We apply filtering in the firmware for this, but if the time constant is longer than 200s between pulses with a underlying base current that leaves the gauge in discharge mode, it can cause the gauge to think the resistance is too high because of the pulse dropping the voltage.

    Let me check with the algorithm team on this.

    If you upload the golden .gg file for new batteries SOH estimation will probably be better but since the cells would be slightly aged SOH would not be perfect.

    "Before saving the Golden File, set Update Status to 02 to disable IT gauging, set the Qmax Cycle Count to 0, and set the Cycle Count to 0. For a pack side gauge, this ensures that when the pack is assembled and gauging and lifetime data is enabled, the cycle counts start from 0."

    we left Update status 06, Qmax Cycle Count  3, and set the Cycle Count  3. on the golden file 

    does this affect us in any way?

    Not a large impact. it's just not accurate for the pack you upload it to if you use it for the golden image. For any diagnostics you would need to subtract 3 cycles from the gauge. Also any features dependent on cycle count in the gauge you should consider there are already a few programmed cycles.

    Algorithm team is asking what your application is and for the load profile data.

    They also mentioned you can modify the Ra Filter value to the max to prevent Ra from updating to keep the resistance stable due to your pulsed load. This is not ideal for long term gauging, but it should remain fairly accurate and the Ra table will not be corrupted.

    After uploading did you perform a RESET command? You could also use a POR for the gauge to use the new settings.
