LM63615-Q1: Recommended Pi Filter Justification

Part Number: LM63615-Q1

Hi,

I've to use the Pi filter, recommended in the datasheet for buck converter with Input condition of 9V-16V to deliver an output of 5V, 1A.

However I'm not able to figure out:

1) What is the purpose of the Resistor which is being added in series with the Capacitor at the input side?

2) The Capacitor in series with the resistor is MLCC or Electrolytic type?

It would mean a lot if you guys let me know of this.

Thanks & Regards,

Vineet Anurag

  • Hello

The series combination of R and C is a damper.  It is meant to damp the resonance of the LC EMI filter and prevent interaction

between the filter and the input impedance of the DC/DC converter.  The series C is a low ESR ceramic.  Rather than using the series

RC combination, you can use an aluminium electrolytic capacitor.  The ESR of the electrolytic capacitor acts as the "R" component.

Please see the attached application note for more information about choosing these components.

    Thanks
