Hi Team, 

Good day. I am posting this inquiry on behalf of the customer.

LM317, max Vin - Vout is 40V for the standard version. No spec on Max Vin for the standard configuration with ref leg R's. Does that mean I can input 1000V and as long as I keep output > 960V I am OK ?

    Hi Marvin,

    That's correct. The internal circuitry will never see the 1kV because of the floating GND (ADJ) so as long as the max VIN - VOUT condition is satisfied the regulator is happy. Note that the datasheet recommends a max VIN - VOUT of 37V (40V abs max).
