TPS54678: comparison between TPS54678 and TPS62867

Part Number: TPS54678
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS62867, , TPS62816-Q1, TPS62873

Hi Team,

I see TPS62867 is next gen of TPS54678. Please kindly provide a comparison on these two parts. Thanks

  • Hi Given,

I can provide some basic points here, but if you have a specific customer or market that you are looing at, please email me or move this thread internal so that I can tailor the information.

The TPS54678 is over 10 years old and, as such, is most likely not running on a newer technology nor 300mm process node.  This increases the cost and decreases the available supply, compared to newer devices.

Also, newer devices are smaller, more integrated (requiring fewer external components), and more efficient.  Comparing the 1.8Vout curves in the D/S, the TPS62867 is a few % more efficient and contains an optional power save mode to greatly boost efficiency at light loads.

Comparing the typical application example, the TPS62867 requires 10+ fewer components and the power components (inductor and capacitors) are smaller and cheaper due to the higher switching frequency.

The TPS62867 has much lower Iq and supports 100% mode.

The TPS62867 has worse thermal performance (Theta values) due to its smaller package but has lower power loss to compensate this.  The TPS62867 also does not use fixed frequency current mode control (with a SYNC input)--use the TPS62873 or TPS62816-Q1 families if this is needed.  The TPS62867 does not have a settable switching frequency, nor SS pin, nor a precise EN pin, nor external compensation.

    Thanks,

    Chris
