BQ76920: Two 3.2V battery support

Part Number: BQ76920
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ7718, BQ2947, BQ2945

Hi Team,

I would like to know if BQ7692003 can support 2 cell LifePO4 battery. The 2 batteries with 3.2V nominal voltage will be mounted in series which will be 6.4V in total. The discharge voltage for each is 2.5V and will be 5V in parallel for both.

Is there a way for BQ7692003PWR to support 2 cells? the datasheet specifies that the minimum is 3 Cells and that the minimum voltage required to make the IC works properly is 6V and the discharge voltage is 5V. or can you recommend a device that can support this?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Marvin

  • Hi Marvin,

Unfortunately, the BQ769203 would not be able to function with a 2s configuration. There is currently no monitor in our portfolio that is able to support 2s.

There are several protectors in our portfolio that do support 2s configurations but are not programmable by the customer so it is based on the available OPN and will much simpler than a monitor.

You may look into the BQ2945, BQ2947 or BQ7718 for a more simple protection scheme for 2s.

  • Hi Luis,

the datasheet for the BQ2945, BQ2947 or BQ7718 only mentions Li-ion battery. Can you confirm if these devices can support 3.2V LiFePO4?

  • Hi Marvin,

The protection IC is only looking at the voltage state of the battery and reacts only when the threshold values are violated, so it is not purely dependent on the chemistry but does have a strong correlation as this is determined by the nominal voltage.

In the case of a 3.2V nominal voltage, I don't believe there will be a viable option as the lowest OV threshold is at 3.85V for the BQ7718 which I believe to be unsafe for this battery chemistry.
