UCC29950: using PFC with different parameters

Part Number: UCC29950
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMG2610

Hello:

It seems that the UCC29950 controller is presented as working with a specific boost output voltage ( e.g 385v).

Yet, it is a general controller for "boost" type behaviour. There is no reason why it cannot be set up to work with DCM SEPIC PFC topology, is there? Caveat is that a few things need to be understood and set up correctly.

Pl see the attached section of the Vbulk connection in  pdf.

-Our preferred output will be 325V- the reason being we can use 350V GaN devices from EPC. For the HB LLC stage, this ought to give a sufficient margin.

- In order to get started, we plan to connect two diodes from ac line to the Vbulk node. This will also provide a situation Vbulk= Vac peak. Correct?

We can scale Rtop and Rbttm according to the situation here., Correct?

Rest of the parameters such as PFC_CS can be easily set up as the situation demands.

Is there a TINA TI model we can run to validate these changes?

Is there a GaN HB similar to LMG2610 for ACF topology but for LLC?

Will the LLC stage meant for high-power LED driver be able to be controlled for current in the string and be dimmable from the LLC by current control?

Appreciate any help in this matter.

  • Hi Robin,

I'm sorry, but I wasn't able to get to your question today. Please give me a day or two to respond.

    Thank you,

    Ray

  • Hi Robin,

I'm very sorry for the extended delay. I believe this is related to the other thread where we've been discussing using the UCC29950 in a SEPIC configuration.

    - The diodes you show are similar to the surge diodes used in many PFC designs to shunt the input around the power devices when Vbulk < Vinac_rec (like during startup or input surges) . That is useful when for a boost design but it will interfere with the operation of the SEPIC when it operates at Vbulk < Vinac_rec

    - Yes, you can scale Rtop/Rbttm to modify Vbulk

    - Unfortunately, there are no sim models available for the UCC29950

    - LMG3410 is being used in 600W LLC design

    Regards,

    Ray
