BQ2980: LiFePO4 Support Inquiry

Part Number: BQ2980
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ2982

Hello E2E Experts,

Good day.

I have two questions:

1. For BQ2980/ BQ2982 the OVP triggers at 4.475V. For the LiFePO4 battery, the nominal voltage being 3.6V, will this IC be able to protect the cell? In other words, since the trigger voltage is much different than the nominal voltage, is a LiFePO4 cell safe to use with this charger?-or will it overcharge before safety is triggered? The data sheet I am referring to is here https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/bq2980.pdf?ts=1683279241160&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.ti.com%252Fproduct%252FBQ2980.

2. In the datasheet, I find the following table on Page 6:

Can you elaborate on which value corresponds to which IC for each of the above parameters?

Regards,

CSC

  • Hello CSC,

As long as the OVP they want is within our programmable thresholds, it could be possible (3750mV to 5200mV). However, none of our currently released parts would likely work as the OVP might be too high for this chemistry.

The values depend on which IC they're looking at. The Device Comparison Table shows the typical values for each IC. The table in page 6 also shows the min-max for each.

  • Hello Luis,

    Good day.

“As long as the OVP you want is within our programmable thresholds, it could be possible (3750mV to 5200mV).”

What I did not understand is, if I purchase the chip, how can I configure the OVP? Or this value is pre-configured and fixed?

“However, none of our currently released parts would likely work as the OVP might be too high for this chemistry.”

Does this mean the IC is not suitable for LiFePO4 after all?

    Regards,

    CSC

  • Hello CSC,

The parts get configured at the factory. As I said there are no currently released parts that have the OV threshold for your chemistry.

It can be suitable for the LiFePO4 battery, however, it likely means that a custom part would have to be made. Which would depend on the business case if we do it or not. They may have to contact their sales representative for this.

    Best Regards,
