LM5051: Connecting positive to negative buck-boost converter in parallel to increase the output current

Part Number: LM5051
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS40075, LM27403,

Hi Team,

Our customer is looking for a DC/DC converter with Vin = 15V and Vout = - 12V, Iout = 2A and can be connected in parallel to the same DC/DC converter to increase the output current.

He will configure the TPS40075 or LM27403 as negative output converter by connecting the output to Ground and use the device's GND as negative output as shown in the application note below

https://www.ti.com/lit/an/snva022e/snva022e.pdf

Is the LM5051 suitable for paralleling the TPS40075 or LM27403 DC/DC converter?

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

    LM5051 is an ORing controller.

When two power supplies are connected in ORing configuration , the output is connected to the input power supply which has the highest voltage. The power path of the power supply with lower input voltage is disconnected by the ORing controller and blocks reverse current flow.

Load sharing happens between two input power supplies only if their output voltages along with the voltage drop due to path impedances are very close to each other within 45mV. LM5051 turns OFF the FET to block reverse current when the difference between IN and OUT is > 45mV.
