Hello Jimmy,
We used this to power an automotive switch and its peripheral ICs. so we followed its reference design.
LMR14050 was the IC used in it, so we choose that.
1) Is there any critical reason why we shouldn't be using the LMR14050.?
Since we are in a stage where we have completed schematics as well as layout for this build. it will be very difficult to change it now. But we can consider your suggested ICs from next build onwards.
2) Also, are you able to review our layout file.?
Regards,
Arjun
Hi Arjun,
It is not recommended to use a 5A device for your smaller currents like 0.5A and 1A currents.
The LMR14050 high-side current limit is 7.9A(typ) and 9.7A(max). You need the inductor saturation current to be greater than that current limit, otherwise in case there is a output short circuit the inductor might saturate and could damage the device.
You can use LMR14020 2A with lower current limits (3.2A typ and 3.8A max), or use inductors with higher saturation currents.
However higher saturation currents will increase the overall inductor size.
Alternative you can use lower voltage devices, you can check with WEBENCH on ideal devices that may be lower cost.
Hope this helps,
