BQ2980: Availability of devices with max 4.3V OVP and overtemperature protection enabled

Part Number: BQ2980
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ2982

I am looking for a single-cell Li-ion protector with overtemperature protection, and have found the BQ2980/BQ2982 series devices. After looking at the datasheet, I am a bit confused about what device configurations are actually available to order. Table 8-1 seems to indicate that there is great flexibility in the available configurations, or the ability to custom order factory programmed components with any combination of fault thresholds, while the Device Comparison Table of section 5, and the package option addendum at the bottom of the datasheet, lists only a very limited set of available configurations. For example, the three devices with 4.3V or lower overvoltage protection have overtemperature protection marked as "disabled". I am not comfortable with a 4.4-4.5V overvoltage limit for a 4.2V Li-ion cell. I am already using the BQ29700 with 4.275V OVP level, but want something with overvoltage protection added, to protect against overheating in the PCB where the protector is mounted.

In Section 9.2.1.2 of the BQ2980 datasheet it states:
“When a decision is made on the various thresholds, search for whether a device configuration is available or contact the local sales office for more information”.

Also, in Section 8.1.1 the table shows the device configuration range for OV, UV, OT etc., with a note
“Texas Instruments preprograms devices: Devices are not intended to be further customized by the customer.”

So, I am wondering if only the specific configurations listed in the Device Comparison Table are available, or if other combinations can be ordered. I have been in contact with TI support by email about this, but was told to post it on TI E2E.

  • Hello Martin,

That is correct, the device comparison table will have all orderable catalog variants that are currently available on ti.com. We are able to program custom settings at the factory but this usually requires a more extensive evaluation of the business case.
