TUSB546EVM: How to use EVM to control TPS55288EVM-045

Now that I have the utility TPS6598x Application Customization Tool communicating to the TUSB546EVM via I2C, my next step is to understand how to interface it with the TPS55288EVM. I have seen that this is done with a later version of the power path part: TPS65987 and the TPS55288 with the PMP40801, which I cannot order, but would need to be built. The issue I am having is understanding the steps needed to add support for the power supply to the binary image for this EVM if it is even supported. Is this performed with the utility and how? I am not seeing anything obvious when starting a new project using a template with the TPS65982 or the TPS65987.

Is there some documentation that would provide some more detail on how to do this?

The plan is to use the following parts together:

DisplayPort/USBC Multiplexer: TUSB546AI

Power Path Controller: TPS65987DDH

USB Power Supply: TPS55288

For a dual-role USB-C connector and both be powered by the USBC port (Sink for charging an internal battery) and deliver power to an external device (source) like a smaller Display Port monitor,

Hi Mark,

I recommend taking a look at this application note (https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slvaeq7/slvaeq7.pdf?ts=1680700745268&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.google.com%252F), it describes how to use the Application Customization Tool to configure the PD controller to set TPS55288 the correct voltage using I2C. It is also possible to use the GPIO outputs from the PD to set the output voltage, this is how we implemented on the TPS65987D EVM (example shown in the user guide on page 12: https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slvubo9a/slvubo9a.pdf?ts=1689204515608&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.ti.com%252Ftool%252FTPS65987EVM).

The PD controller can talk to multiple I2C slave devices (i.e. TUSB546 and TPS55288) on the same bus line or with GPIO events. Let me know if further clarification is needed on any items!

There is some missing information in the app notes that is a bit critical: These options are not available unless you select the Advanced option when creating a new project, and a specific selection of the device's role for the dialogs to be similar. (Dual Role, Prefer data host)

I think I can muddle through, but it is clear that the I2C master is not available on the TUSB546 to use to control the power supply via I2C. I am going to need the TPS65987D EVM instead and control the TUSB546AI MUX from a separate board rather than the local old NFND controller.

Hi Mark,

The advanced option will show all the configurable registers in the PD controller as well as the I2C events table to be able to configure alternate modes such as DP. The TPS65987D EVM already has TPS55288 on it which is configurable through GPIO pins. If you want to control the DCDC via I2C then you will need to manually wire the TPS65987D and TPS55288 EVM together and making sure I2C and the power paths are connected properly.

The schematic for the TPS65987D EVM has a LM3489QMM with GPIO control on it, has the EVM been updated with the TPS55288? If so, that would be great!

Hi Mark,

Let me double check with my team and get back to you. I believe you should be able to control the TPS55288 in a similar fashion to how on the EVM TPS65987 controls LM3489 via GPIO (changing the resistor feedback).

Apologies for delay in response, for GPI control you can refer to the schematic on TPS65987DEVM as reference. Although this uses LM3489, you can apply the same GPIO logic of modifying the FB resistor from TPS55288:

Thanks for the response. I will discuss it with the customer of which method may be best (I2C control vs. FB resistor selection). I have both versions in the target design in case I2C control implementation turns out to be difficult to test and implement. I have been away on vacation, so I need to get back into the swing of this design.

Hi Raymond, it is too early to say one way or the other as I have been out of the office for what method to use. I prefer to use the I2C as physical size, flexibility and the metrics it can provide. However, from how I understand things now, the wizard only supports writing pre-defined tables of I2C data to the devices but doesn't allow reading back of the operating metrics. But until I get this all pulled together and get a grip on the development limitations; I won't know what to ask yet.

Should I start a new thread for this I2C control method or stay here? It is a lot to absorb for something we thought initially would be a little more on the simple side. The app note linked above: "USB Type C Power Delivery Source with TPS65987 and TPS55288 (ti.com)" will go a long ways to get us started, thank you.
