BQ76920EVM: -Vbatt vs. Gnd

Part Number: BQ76920EVM

In the slvu924d app note using the BQ7692 there is a net tie connecting -Batt and GND. My system already uses a GND, I'm just checking to make sure these nets are for sure tied together. Can I just label all the "GND" nets in the appnote as BATT- on my schematic and connect my gnd to J6 (source of the main power fet)? Or is the net tie connect somewhere with a small tie for a reason?

  • Hello Ryan,

Yes, the net-tie connects GND to BATT-.

The reason why we use a net-tie is to separate the high current battery from the low-current ground of the IC. This is to protect the IC from any unintended high currents or ESD currents.

You can name your BATT- as GND, however, you would have to ensure to separate the high current path of the battery from the IC ground on the layout. This is usually a lot easier with a net-tie.

    Hope this helped Slight smile.
